Volkswagen is preparing to take its popular Golf R to the racetrack. The German automaker is teaming up with Max Kruse Racing to build a fully race-ready version of the hot hatch, though it's not expected to hit competitive tarmac until the 2027 Nürburgring 24 Hours.
The new Golf R 24H concept serves as an exciting preview of the final, track-focused machine. This aggressive concept model features a massive front splitter, considerably wider fenders than the stock Golf R, and a substantial rear wing – practically big enough to serve a full meal on.
The two companies are already deep into developing the ultimate race car, but Volkswagen hasn't quite revealed all the juicy technical details yet. We know it will retain its signature all-wheel drive, as expected from a Golf R. However, specifics regarding which racing class Volkswagen plans to compete in are still under wraps.
As the preview model's name clearly indicates, the production-spec race car that evolves from the Golf R 24H will make its debut at the Nürburgring 24 Hours in 2027. This high-profile return to endurance racing will also mark the 25th anniversary of Volkswagen's revered "R" performance badge, first introduced with the iconic Golf R32 back in 2002.
