The Hyundai Ioniq 5 has become the best-selling electric vehicle in the United States that isn't a Tesla, with over 20,730 units sold in the first half of the year. This represents a 9% increase year to date, making it a strong contender in the EV market.
The Ford Mustang Mach-E managed to rack up 11,632 sales in the first half, while Chevrolet sold 16,249 units of the Equinox EV. However, both models have seen their sales fall by more than 40% year to date. The Toyota bZ4X has seen its sales soar, with 17,553 units sold, but it still trails behind the Hyundai Ioniq 5.
There's a lot to like about the Ioniq 5, and it's easy to see why people are falling in love with it. The new Ioniq 5 is a nicer, easier car to live with while still being reasonably priced at a dealership. The latest version has a NACS charging port and can use Tesla's Supercharger network, plus it gained a rear wiper. It's also nice to drive, and a big price cut after the tax credit ended made it one of the greatest values on the new car market. The very base model of the Ioniq 5 can be had for as little as $35,000 before destination fees.
Now the EV sales charts are still dominated by Tesla, and they probably will be for some time. But will new cars like the Rivian R2 and the Slate pose a real threat, dethroning the Ioniq 5 and maybe even a Tesla? Only time will tell.
