There's no cheaper way to get into a new automobile that can hit the double century mark. Did you know today, June 30th, is National Corvette Day? Well, it is, and as such it seems quite fitting that General Motors chose Tuesday to reveal that the 2027 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray is officially a 200-mph car.
That's right, the new top speed of the regular base-model Corvette that starts at $73,495 is now a full 200 mph. That’s up by six mph over the pre-refresh C8 that topped out at 194 mph. One important caveat to note here is that this 200-mph top speed is only achievable with the base car; adding the Z51 performance package tacks on downforce that lowers the top speed; Chevy didn’t say by how much, but it cut 10 mph from the top end of the car in previous years.

The 2027 Corvette Stingray has upgraded to a 6.7-liter LS6 V-8, raising output to 535 horsepower and 520 pound-feet of torque.“That’s all power,” small block assistant chief engineer Mike Kociba said. “The record really shows the strength of the LS6, an engine that we set out to create a unique place in the Corvette lineup.”
This feat makes it the cheapest 200-mph car you can buy brand new off the lot today. Chevy even went so far as to prove its point by setting the top speed with a base 1LT model. The next-cheapest way to hit the double century in a new ride? Also a GM product, with the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing managing to hit 205 mph.
So, happy Corvette Day to those who celebrate. And in case you were wondering why today’s the day, that’s because the first production Corvette rolled off the line on June 30, 1953. That car had a top speed of about 105 mph, so it’s safe to say things have changed a little in the meantime.
