Tesla is reportedly planning to bring the long-wheelbase Model Y to America following the recent departure of the Model X. Tesla is gearing up to sell a larger version of the popular Model Y in America. If you follow the Chinese car market, you'll know that many automakers create special long-wheelbase versions of their cars for China, where chauffeurs are more common and rear-seat comfort is prioritized. Now, it appears that Tesla will bring the stretched Model Y L to the United States, as reported by Forbes.
The Model Y L is currently offered in China, Australia, and India. It offers more rear-seat room than the standard SUV and space for six passengers. The U.S. arrival of the Model Y L is likely meant to fill the gap left by the Model X, Tesla's large SUV that ended production this spring after 11 years. The Model X offered three-row seating, and while a seven-seat version of the regular Model Y is also available, the Model Y L will be less cramped for third-row passengers.
The Model Y L measures about seven inches longer than the regular Model Y, and the roof is nearly two inches taller. The six seats are arranged in three rows of two, with captain's chairs the only option for the second row. It's unclear which powertrains the longer model will come with, but we expect it to launch with the dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup. The rear-wheel-drive single-motor powertrain could join the party too, but we're not sure Tesla will give the Model Y L the high-powered Performance treatment.
The U.S.-market Model Y L is expected to be built at the company's Gigafactory in Texas and will likely go on sale here before the end of 2026. The arrival of the long-wheelbase Model Y could boost sales of the SUV, which is already the bestselling EV in the United States, even further. Tesla sold an estimated 78,591 Model Ys in the first quarter of this year, representing one out of every three EVs sold in Q1, according to Cox Automotive.
