Porsche 911 GT3 RS Driver Arrested, Car Impounded After Alleged 140-MPH Highway Run

The Porsche 911 GT3 RS is one of the most capable road cars on the planet, with its naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six engine, aggressive aerodynamics, and track-focused suspension, it was engineered to dominate race circuits. However, Highway 168 in Fresno, California isn’t a race circuit. Which is why, according to California Highway Patrol – Fresno, a 911 GT3 RS car was impounded and the driver arrested after allegedly exceeding 140 miles per hour on that highway.

A social media post from the California Highway Patrol's Fresno division shows a driver in handcuffs being placed in the back of a patrol car. In front of the patrol car is a silver 911 GT3 RS; another image shows the high-end sports car being loaded on a flatbed truck. The CHP didn't mince words in its post, warning drivers that excessive speed puts everyone on the road at risk. The agency noted that the driver not only ended the day with flashing lights and handcuffs, but also lost possession of the car.

While modern performance cars like the GT3 RS are remarkably stable at high speeds, as we all ought to be aware of by now, public roads are not racetracks. Unexpected traffic, debris, road imperfections, and changing conditions can quickly turn a high-speed run into a life-threatening situation—and at 140 mph, a vehicle covers more than 200 feet every second, leaving very little time to react when something goes wrong. California is home to numerous racetracks; this GT3 RS driver was only a couple of hours away from the legendary WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. Not only would that have been a safer option, it's a lot more impressive to master the Corkscrew than Highway 168.
