Next-Gen BMW M3 Touring to Offer Electric and Gasoline Options

Just like the sedan, the next BMW M3 Touring will arrive as a technological dual, offering customers a choice between the powertrain that suits them best. As M Sales Chief Sylvia Neubauer clarified to the British AutoCar, the current BMW M3 Touring (G81) with its over 500 horsepower biturbo inline-six cylinder (S58) is a huge success, even in markets without a strong wagon tradition, making the decision to continue the success story an easy one.

The technology for the next power wagon is being developed by the M GmbH for the sedan model. As M CEO Frank van Meel revealed in an interview a year and a half ago, the G80 successor BMW M3 (G84) and the first electric BMW M3 (ZA0) will come with two fundamentally different variants of the M3 in parallel. Now it's clear that the same dual offer will be available for the BMW M3 Touring as well.

It's no secret which of the two variants will lead in terms of performance: even if the gasoline M3 is expected to gain a few more percentage points compared to the current generation, it will still be clearly overshadowed by the electric M3 with M eDrive. The electric powertrain with four electric motors allows for wheel-selective torque distribution, enabling the torque applied to each individual wheel to be changed in fractions of a second. This makes it possible to always utilize the full traction potential of each individual wheel - an option that is simply not feasible with "just" one engine.

The design of both variants will be fundamentally very similar, for example in the area of the front design or the side view. However, the rear will look completely different, as the gasoline M3 will unmistakably point to its drive and shine with four large tailpipes. Apart from that, we only expect subtle differences, such as those that can be expected between the BMW i3 (NA0) and the 3 Series (G50), including a slightly longer front with enough space for six cylinders in a row.
