Naming a New Vehicle Is Way Harder Than You Think, and Experts Still Aren’t Sure Ford Got It Right

Ford's new $30,000 EV pickup, the Fathom, has sparked debate among auto enthusiasts and professionals alike. The name has received mixed reviews, with some praising its uniqueness and others criticizing its lack of connection to Ford's heritage.

According to Jay Jurisich, founder and Creative Director of naming agency Zinzin, "I think Fathom is actually a pretty good name — for something, but not necessarily for this truck." Jurisich has experience in naming vehicles, having worked on model names for Mack trucks. Saul Colt, founder of The Idea Integration Company, agrees, stating that "my first reaction is that I probably would have leaned into a legacy name" to leverage Ford's existing brand equity.

Colt explains that using a legacy name would have allowed Ford to build on its existing brand recognition, rather than starting from scratch with a new name. However, Jurisich notes that the Fathom name does have a "high-end" tone, which could be beneficial for the brand. The debate highlights the challenges of naming a new vehicle, as it requires balancing factors such as brand identity, target audience, and marketing strategy.

Ford's decision to use the Fathom name may be seen as a bold move, as it deviates from the company's traditional naming conventions. However, it also reflects the company's efforts to innovate and stay ahead in the competitive automotive market. As the Fathom hits the market, it will be interesting to see how consumers respond to the new name and whether it will become a success for Ford.
