Just under a year after quietly debuting in Monterey, the second-generation Lexus LFA concept has finally been seen in motion. Last August, Lexus quietly debuted a supercar concept with front-engined proportions at a Monterey Car Week event. It waited four more months to say more, eventually revealing it as an electric concept wearing the brand's legendary LFA badge. After seven more quiet months, the new LFA has finally been seen in motion on Thursday at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in England.
Running in camouflage that mirrors what the GR GT wore at the event last year, the LFA was accompanied on a relatively slow run up the hill by both its road-going and racing internal combustion relatives. The engine noises from those turbocharged V-8s drowned out any sounds made by the Lexus, so the run shows fairly little about the car itself.
What we do know is that Toyota showed off both the GR GT and GR GT3 halo cars in camouflage at this very event last year, a little under five months before finally debuting both cars in the same December event where the LFA was first unveiled under its actual name. By making a public debut at the same event, this quick drive could preview a similar production-spec debut for the LFA in the near future.
While we may not know exactly what the all-electric LFA successor's deal is just yet, we do know that the GR GT will take its expected place as an internal combustion halo car within the Toyota family. That front-engined car is being marketed by GR as a standalone brand rather than as a Toyota, and American buyers looking for one will be getting theirs through Lexus dealers rather than the typical Toyota dealership network. It hopefully won't be long before those showrooms have both gas- and electric-powered supercars sitting side by side.
