We're still wondering what the future pickup-like EV will be called, but the name Ranchero feels like a real possibility. Ford's electric F-150 was arguably a failure, but the automaker is circling the wagons to bring a new kind of EV to the masses.
Based on its upcoming Universal EV platform, which will benefit from fewer parts and a simplified production process to keep costs low, the first variant will be a Maverick-sized truck. Many details are still being kept under wraps—though Ford has launched its own website promoting the project—but our spy photographer has captured several new images that help bring Ford's new electric pickup more into focus.
The prototype in these photos was spied testing in Dearborn, Michigan. While the bulky camouflage on the front suggests the cargo-bed-toting Universal EV will have a tall, blunt grille like Ford's other trucks, we think that's a red herring based on images that Ford has released showing air traveling around what appears to be a low, gently arching front end. It also makes sense that the new electric truck will prioritize an aero-friendly design to help maximize efficiency and driving range.
Although the wheels in these pictures are fully disguised, we've seen the uncovered versions on Ford's own site. What our new spy photos do reveal is the wheel diameter (19 inches) and the tire specs: Michelin E Primacy all-seasons, sized at 245/55R-19. The image above provides our first look at the Universal EV's interior that, unsurprisingly, features a large center touchscreen.
While that was as predictable as Elon Musk posting controversial tweets, it'll be interesting to see whether Ford follows Tesla's lead and goes for a minimalist dashboard layout with a single display and virtually no physical switchgear. At the very least, the truck's interior will be roomier than its size suggests, with Ford claiming it will have more space inside than Toyota's compact RAV4 SUV.
These spy photos also give us our best look at the headlights, which appear to feature an intricate lighting signature that doesn't resemble any other current Ford models. We get a peek at the truck's grille through a small opening in the camo that also reveals a front-facing camera. It's hard to tell if the spoiler-esque piece that protrudes from the back of the truck cab is also meant to mislead or a production-intent design element.
Either way, it looks like the rear window will be available with a sliding section like some traditional trucks. We're obviously still waiting to find out what Ford will call its modern-day Model T. The Ranchero nameplate feels like a smart bet after Ford trademarked the name last fall. Will a two-door, car-based pickup sold from the mid-1950s through the late 1970s have the brand equity to successfully market such a hugely important new model?
