Ford Recalls 740,000 Trucks and SUVs That Could Roll Away in Park

Ford is recalling over 740,000 vehicles in the United States due to a transmission fault that could cause them to roll away even when in park. The recall affects certain 2018-2021 Ford Explorer, Expedition, and F-150 models, as well as Lincoln Aviator and Navigator models. To remedy the issue, Ford will update the Powertrain Control Modules of affected vehicles and inspect the park system for damage, replacing compromised components where needed.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has warned that the faulty transmission could damage the parking pawl, preventing it from holding the vehicle in place and creating a rollaway risk unless the parking brake is also engaged. Until the issue is resolved, owners are advised to use the parking brake every time they park their vehicle.

Ferrari and BMW are among the automakers shifting from copper to aluminum for wiring applications, which is currently cheaper due to data centers driving up the cost of copper. Chinese automakers and Tesla have also made the switch in recent years, citing the added benefit of aluminum being lighter than copper, which is particularly important for electric vehicles.
