It's time to say goodbye to the BMW M3 as we know it. The 2027 model year will be the last for the current generation of the M3. This news was confirmed by BMW Product Planning Specialist Scott Stirling in an interview with BimmerLife. The M3 won't return for the 2028 model year, marking the end of an era for the sports sedan.
The M3 CS Handschalter, a manual transmission version of the M3, will serve as the final hurrah for the current generation. It's a limited-production model that will be available in very limited numbers in the United States and Canada. The M3 CS Handschalter starts at $108,450 in the U.S., but you don't have to spend that much to get an M3. The standard M3 starts at $80,650.
View Price on AmazonThe next-generation M3, codenamed G84, will be built at a different factory and will feature a new twin-turbo 3.0-liter engine. It's expected to arrive in 2028 and will likely be available with an automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. There's also an electric M3, known as the ZA0, which will enter production in Munich next year. It will have a quad-motor setup and a net capacity of over 100 kWh, producing significantly more power than the 463 horsepower available in the i3 50 xDrive.
The writing is on the wall for manual transmissions, with M boss Frank van Meel recently hinting that the six-speed manual is unlikely to survive into the next decade. However, BMW isn't abandoning the traditional recipe just yet. The current-generation M2 and M4 are rumored to remain in production until closer to the end of the decade, giving you a few more years to buy one of these coupes with a stick shift and rear-wheel drive.
