The latest-generation BMW iX3 electric SUV has successfully passed Euro NCAP's more stringent safety tests, receiving a perfect five-star rating. The iX3 was among the first vehicles to be tested under the new assessment standard, which was introduced this year. The new protocol evaluates the vehicle's performance in four categories: Safe Driving, Crash Avoidance, Crash Protection, and Post Crash Safety.
In the Safe Driving category, the BMW iX3 scored 73%, which includes features such as occupant detection, driver monitoring, and vehicle assistance systems. The German EV achieved an impressive 83% in the Crash Avoidance category, which assesses the reliability and safety of systems like lane departure assist and automatic braking.
The iX3 excelled in the Crash Protection category, scoring 86% out of 100%. According to Euro NCAP, the vehicle offered "good or adequate protection for all occupants in the frontal offset test." Additionally, the iX3 scored full points in the side impact tests, including the far-side test. However, the protection of vulnerable road users like cyclists and pedestrians was somewhat varied, with a few areas where good protection was provided to the head or pelvis.
In the Post Crash Safety category, the iX3 achieved a near-perfect score of 95%. The safety experts noted that the third-party service eCall function is available, although not in all countries covered by Euro NCAP. The electrically-operated door handles worked flawlessly, and the mechanical fallback was confirmed during testing.
