The summer break at the BMW Leipzig plant in 2026 will be used for another major overhaul. The focus is on preparing the plant for the electric cars of the new class, whose technology will be rolled out gradually across almost the entire model range and will therefore also affect Leipzig. According to a conversation between plant manager Petra Peterhänsel and the dpa, the break will last around five and a half weeks.
While she doesn't make any specific announcements about the models that will be built in Leipzig in the future, compact electric cars like the BMW i1 (NB0) are practically a given. Currently, the BMW 1 Series (F70), the 2 Series Gran Coupé (F74), the 2 Series Active Tourer (U06), and the MINI Countryman (U25) are built at the BMW Leipzig plant, with the latter being the only one also offered as a pure electric vehicle (BEV).
With the electrification of the 1 Series, the production of the BMW i1 would be the logical next step, and the upcoming i2 (NB8) could also be built here one day. However, production of both models is not expected to start before 2028, which is why the measures during the summer break in 2026 are likely just the beginning of further conversions.
It's clear that BMW is currently missing a compact electric car below the iX1 for many European markets. Although the compact electric SUV has been one of the brand's most successful models since its introduction, it's likely that the introduction of an i1 could cost some iX1 customers. However, given the rapid development of electric technology, further updates to the range are inevitable.
A BMW i1 with new class technology is urgently needed, and it's expected to offer a range of at least 373 miles (600 km) on a single charge, with up to 435 miles (700 km) possible depending on the configuration and technical setup. Details on this are expected to be communicated by BMW in 2027.
With 259,430 units produced in 2025, the Leipzig plant is one of the five largest sites in the BMW Group's production network. Even more vehicles were built only in Spartanburg, Regensburg, Tiexi, and Dingolfing last year.
