A suspected car thief in California found an unusual and destructive way to steal a Porsche 911 last week. Officers responded to reports of an attempted vehicle theft in North Hollywood at approximately 6:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 16, NBC 4 Los Angeles reports. When they arrived, they found a Porsche 911 hooked to the back of a black pickup truck. The Porsche appears to be a 992.1-generation Turbo or Turbo S Cabriolet wearing some Techart modifications, and the truck it is hooked up to seems to be a Ram TRX.
Police ordered the driver to stop, but instead, the pickup sped away, dragging the Porsche behind it through city streets. As the pursuit continued, the 911 bounced over curbs, scraped against the pavement, and suffered extensive body damage. The situation became even worse when the Porsche eventually broke free from the pickup and slid uncontrolled before coming to a stop in front of a car wash.
View Price on AmazonA short time later, officers caught up with the suspect and took the truck driver into custody. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the bizarre incident. Authorities say the suspect, whose identity has not been released, was charged with felony evading.
For Porsche enthusiasts, the video is difficult to watch. The combination of body damage and thoughtless treatment of one of the world’s great sports cars is heartbreaking. The car was recovered but is now facing repair bills that will likely climb into the tens of thousands of dollars.
Whether the Porsche will ever return to the road remains to be seen. Depending on the extent of the hidden mechanical and chassis damage, insurers could determine that repairing the car simply isn't economically feasible.
