Mercedes-Benz is not typically associated with minivans, especially in the US market. However, the new VLE-Class EV is set to change that. This electric minivan is smaller than the commercial-focused Sprinter and is designed for passenger transport, offering seating for up to eight people. The VLE-Class EV rides on Mercedes' new van.ea architecture and will be available with a choice of single-motor or dual-motor powertrains.
The 115-kWh battery is estimated to provide a range of up to 340 miles, and the 800-volt architecture allows for recharging at up to 300 kilowatts. Inside, the VLE-Class EV features a dash-spanning Superscreen and an available 31.3-inch infotainment display that deploys from the ceiling. Several seating configurations will be offered, including one with ultra-luxurious center-row chairs, perfect for executive transport.
The VLE300 has a single, 272-hp motor driving the front wheels, while the VLE400 gets a dual-motor setup, providing all-wheel drive and 413 horsepower. An air-spring suspension is optional, as is four-wheel steering for greater maneuverability. When we drove the Europe-market version of the VLE, we found the powertrains to be exceptionally smooth and appreciated the van's surprising agility. Ride quality is cushy, and the cabin remains quiet at speed.
In comparison, the VLE will likely be a bit slower than its closest competitor, the Volkswagen ID.Buzz, which got to 60 mph in between 5.5 seconds and 6.7 seconds in our testing. EPA range estimates are not yet available, but we estimate that the VLE300 will offer as much as 340 miles of range. The VLE400's range estimate will likely come in a bit lower, at around 320 miles.
