Mercedes-Benz is about to shake up the US minivan market with the introduction of the 2028 VLE-Class EV. This new model is designed for passenger transport, offering seating for up to eight people. It's also an electric vehicle (at least initially) and rides on the brand's new van.ea architecture.
Buyers will have the option to choose between single-motor or dual-motor powertrains. The single-motor VLE300 produces 272 horsepower, while the dual-motor VLE400 delivers 413 horsepower and all-wheel drive. The 115-kWh battery is estimated to provide a range of up to 340 miles for the VLE300 and around 320 miles for the VLE400.
The VLE-Class EV features an 800-volt architecture, allowing for fast recharging at up to 300 kilowatts. It also supports bi-directional charging. Inside, the van boasts a dash-spanning Superscreen and an available 31.3-inch infotainment display that deploys from the ceiling. Several seating configurations will be offered, including one with ultra-luxurious center-row chairs.
In terms of performance, the VLE-Class EV is expected to be slightly slower than its closest competitor, the Volkswagen ID.Buzz. However, with its smooth powertrains and agile handling, the VLE-Class EV is sure to impress. The van's ride quality is also remarkably cushy, and the cabin remains quiet at speed.
Mercedes-Benz plans to add a hybrid version of the VLE-Class at some point after launch, which should appeal to those who are hesitant about going fully electric. With its unique blend of style, comfort, and versatility, the 2028 Mercedes-Benz VLE-Class EV is set to redefine the minivan segment in the US market.
