The 2027 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport is back with a more stylish design, dropping the third row for a coupe-like look. Just as with the last generation, VW is dropping the third row to build an Atlas with coupe-like proportions. The Atlas is a crucial car for Volkswagen, a mid-sized crossover that sits near the top of the company’s American offerings.
The latest generation arrived in March, but it was conspicuously revealed only in its three-row guise. VW has not forgotten buyers who preferred the sleeker, two-row Atlas Cross Sport model offered since 2020, however—and on Monday, the company unveiled the second generation of that variant. As with the previous Atlas, this generation’s Cross Sport is defined mostly by what it does not have.

The resulting car is more stylish and much more distinct, but that change in utility limits its interest only to buyers who do not see themselves needing that third row any time soon. That was apparently not an issue for plenty of Atlas buyers; VW says that 220,000 Atlas Cross Sports have been sold since the model was introduced in 2020.
Dimensions are a bit sportier too—5.4 inches shorter from end to end at 195.6 inches and 2.1 inches closer to the ground. Other changes are largely limited to styling and vary by trim level, although shorter overhangs and a more flush tailgate design provide a distinct look that is consistent across all Cross Sport variants.
