Most of the time, racetrack aptitude and on-road comfort are mutually exclusive when it comes to sports cars, but the Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe is versatile enough not to force a decision. Every option in the GT Coupe's varied trim spread offers signature Mercedes luxury while also remaining a threat to competitors like the Porsche 911 and Aston Martin Vantage when the pedal hits the metal.
If your preferences skew towards the cushier side of that equation, the base GT43 model serves as the premium cruiser of the bunch while still packing 416 horsepower. Making the jump up to the GT55 unlocks a 469-hp twin-turbo V-8 and additional performance kit, like adaptive suspension. Freakish speed is what the all-wheel-drive GT63 trims do best, with the 603-hp GT63 Pro and 805-hp plug-in-hybrid GT63 S E Performance delivering tire-punishing thrills at the limit.
The Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe made its return for the 2024 model year, so it's still relatively fresh. As a result, we don’t expect anything major to change for the 2027 model year. The 416-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder in the GT43 features a 48-volt hybrid starter/generator and an electric exhaust-gas turbocharger. The GT55 and GT63 models pulse with the power of Mercedes' twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 rated for 469 horsepower in the GT55 and 577 horses in the GT63.
The GT63 Pro builds on the goodness of the GT63 by ramping up the output to 603 hp. It also features an improved cooling system designed to keep temps in place on the track. The GT63 S E Performance adds an electric motor to the mix to boost combined horsepower to 805. All models use a nine-speed automatic transmission that replaces the typical torque converter setup with a clutch; the design is said to reduce weight and optimize response to accelerator input.
In comparison, both a GT63 and an automatic-equipped Porsche 911 GT3 reached the 60-mph mark in 2.7 seconds in our testing. The EPA estimates that the GT55 and GT63 models will deliver 14 mpg city, 20 mpg highway, and 16 mpg combined. The GT43 is rated at 19 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined. The plug-in hybrid GT63 S E Performance managed 16 mpg city, 22 mpg highway, and 19 mpg combined.
